2012 Mitsubishi i

Although Mitsubishi’s distinctly egg-shaped “i” electric car has been on sale in Japan since July 2009, and in Europe since early last year, it hasn’t yet reached dealer showrooms in the United States. But in January 2012 the car will finally arrive in the North American market, and when it does, not only will it be the country’s second mass-produced, highway capable, all-electric car of the modern era (along with the Nissan Leaf), it will also be the most affordable.

Ahead of the car’s North American launch, Mitsubishi invited a small group of media to the company’s proving grounds in Okazaki, Japan, last week to be the first to test drive the U.S.-spec i. It may not have the bells and whistles of its closest competitor, the Nissan Leaf, but the i’s efficiency is unmatched, producing zero tailpipe emissions and saving the average driver greatly on fuel costs.
